Despite Long TDs, Sprint Football Drops Opener To Penn
September 18, 2010 | Sprint Football
Andrew Gabriel and Kees Thompson both scored on long touchdowns in the season opener for the Princeton sprint football team, but Penn used a dominant rushing attack to claim a 48-12 victory on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
Kevin Infante led the Princeton offense with 46 rushing yards, while Jaison Zachariah completed seven of 17 passes for 119 yards. His longest competion of the day was a 75-yard pass to Thompson, who broke free of the Quaker defense, found the home sideline and sprinted away from the defensive backfield for the Tigers' second touchdown of the day.
Gabriel had the first score, and his came on a running play that went through the center of the line and ended in the back right corner of the end zone. Like Thompson, Gabriel sprinted past the defense after he got through the line and was untouched on the way to the end zone.
Unfortunately for Princeton, the deficit was too much by the time either score happened. Penn senior Mike Bagnoli was dominant on offense, rushing 15 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 31-yard run just 1:33 into the game, and added a 71-yard run on Penn's first play of the second half. A pair of interception returns for a touchdowns and an 81-yard kickoff return by Whit Shaw helped the Quakers break the game open.
The Princeton defense, which didn't allow a touchdown in either the second or fourth quarters, was led by Michael Howard (eight tackles) and Kevin Zigadlo (2.5 sacks). John Moffat had an interception for Princeton, while John Wolfe recorded both a blocked kick and a fumble recovery.
