Lynch Stops Seven as Men's Soccer Ties Georgetown, 1-1
September 18, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/17/10) - Senior co-captain Sean Lynch matched his career-high with seven saves as the Princeton men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 17 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. In addition to his seven saves, Lynch was invaluable outside the box as well, coming out several times to pull down loose balls and corner kicks.
Georgetown (2-2-1) held the pace in the first half and put together six shots before Princeton (1-2-1) had its first in the 19th minute. In the next six minutes Princeton would take five shots and found success on that fifth shot.
Sophomore Matt Sanner sent a cross into the box from the near touch line and classmate Lester Nare put the ball past goalkeeper Matthew Brutto on the right side to help Princeton take the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Georgetown held an 11-7 shot advantage at the close of the first and had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, but the Princeton defense made them futile.
Senior Josh Walburn made his first appearance on the pitch late in the second half, and nearly gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute when his header hit the post off a set piece from 25 yards out.
Three minutes later however, the Hoyas found the equalizer. Chandler Diggs fought Sanner for the ball in the attacking third and sent it over to Seth C'DeBaca who brought the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and rifled a shot into the back of the net.
Both teams had a number of chances to score the go-ahead goal. Princeton's best effort came with 10 minutes to play in regulation, when Walburn sent the ball forward to junior Antoine Hoppenot who was about 20 yards from the goal. Hoppenot deked his defender and got his shot in just near the end line but his shot went just wide of the far post.
In the two 10-minute overtime periods, Georgetown outshot Princeton 4-1 with one shot on goal.
Princeton's defense made some spectacular plays during the game. In the 62nd minute Jose Colchao broke away for a one-on-one with Lynch but senior Benjamin Burton came on strong to tackle the ball out of play. Sophomore Mark Linville also made a slide for the ball in the 87th minute on another Colchao attempt. Lynch came out to play the ball but was taken down leaving Colchao free to play the ball. Linnville sped to Colchao and was able to slide and kick the ball out of play.
Georgetown finished the game with 21 shots to Princeton's 14. The Hoyas earned nine corners while Princeton had one. Fouls were nearly even with Princeton taking 16 and Georgetown 15.
The Tigers travels to Villanova to meet its second straight BIG EAST opponent for a 4 p.m., game on Sunday, Sept. 19.
