September 25, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/24/10) - Junior Antoine Hoppenot scored two goals leading the Princeton men's soccer team to a 3-1 come-from-behind-win over Richmond on Friday, Sept. 24 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Spiders got the early lead with a goal in the 8th minute, while all three of Princeton's goals came in the second half.
The game was the second game of the Princeton Invitational. In the first game, Adelphi defeated Penn 1-0 scoring with 39 seconds left on the game clock.
Princeton dominated the first half with eight shots to Richmond's five. The Tigers first shot on goal by sophomore Matt Sanner came less than three minutes into the game, but his close range shot went right to the goalkeeper.
The Spiders scored on their first shot on goal in the 8th minute. Jake Russell sent a feed to Justin Chew who was all alone on the far side. Princeton keeper Sean Lynch came out to challenge but Chew used a fake and shot left of Lynch and into the lower left corner of the net.
Sanner and Hoppenot teamed up for the Tigers' next three chances. Hoppenot crossed the ball into the box to Sanner but his shot was stopped at the post by keeper Brock Tomlinson in the 10th minute. Five minutes later Tomlinson came out of his box to stop Hoppenot, but he slipped and Hoppenot delivered a cross into the box but no one was there to put it away. Within five minutes, Sanner knicked the cross bar with another shot.
Closing in on the final minutes of the first half, sophomore Lester Nare had a header, off of a Mark Linnville throw in, blocked by the Spider defense.
Princeton continued to control the ball in the second half, outshooting Richmond 12-7 in the frame.
The Tigers had two chances on headers within three minutes of each. The first was a miscue by Sanner as his header went away from the net but senior Josh Walburn got to the ball near the midfield and sent a low shot in on goal that was saved in the 51st minute. In the 54th minute Linnville had a header off of a Dylan Bowman feed saved by Tomlinson.
Finally in the 55th minute Princeton's near misses became goals.
With shots in the Tigers' favor 12-5, Walburn sent a through ball up into the goal box to Hoppenot who sent the ball past Tomlinson for the equalizer at 54:05.
A corner kick taken by Bowman in the 64th minute resulted in a shot by Sanner getting scooped up at the far post. A minute later a second corner, this time by senior Teddy Schneider, bounced into the box where it was batted around before going over the goal line. Sanner headed the ball into the net with help from Nare and senior Benjamin Burton at 64:11.
Hoppenot was looking for his second goal of the night in the 72nd minute when he made his way into the attacking third and rifled a shot on frame. The saved ball came free and Hoppenot tried to chase it down but was pulled down by his defender giving Princeton a penalty kick.
Walburn lined up to take the kick but his shot blasted off the open gloves of Tomlinson to Hoppenot who quickly made his way off the line and put the ball away to make it 3-1 Tigers at 71:13.
Tomlinson finished the game with eight saves for the Spiders, while Lynch made two stops for the Tigers.
Princeton had an 11-4 edge in corner kicks and had two offsides to Richmond's four.
The Tigers improve to 2-3-1 overall, while Richmond drops to 1-5-1.
