No. 37 Women's Tennis Set to Open Dual Season Wednesday in Jadwin
January 25, 2011 | Women's Tennis
Wednesday will open the dual-meet season for the 37th-ranked Princeton women's tennis team when the Tigers host Rutgers at 10 a.m. and Seton Hall at 4 p.m. on the indoor courts at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Tigers, back-to-back Ivy League champions and NCAA tournament participants, are the highest ranked team north of Virginia and east of Ohio in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released Jan. 25.
Princeton is 31-2 all-time against Rutgers/Douglass, including winning the first 17 and the last 14 around losses in 1995 and 1996. Against Seton Hall, Princeton holds a 7-1 advantage, resuming the series with a 7-0 win last season after a five-year break.
The matches will be the season opener for both of the Big East schools as well.
The home doubleheader is the last time Princeton will play at home until it hosts the ECAC Championship Feb. 18-20. In between, the Tigers will take trips to Tallahassee, Fla., to play in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend site at Florida State against the host Seminoles Saturday and either Texas or Washington Sunday, and then to Nashville, Tenn., for matches against Memphis and Vanderbilt the following weekend.
The Tigers graduated one senior, Melissa Saiontz, from last year's Ivy-undefeated team that, for the second straight year, came within a point of advancing from the first round of the NCAA tournament. This year's team has a great balance of youth and experience, led by seniors Blakely Ashley and Taylor Marable, the latter of which partnered with junior Hilary Bartlett to win a match in the NCAA doubles tournament last spring. Also returning and figuring to play significant roles in the dual meet season are junior Rachel Saiontz and sophomore Monica Chow. Two freshmen, Caitlin Bartlett and Katherine Flanigan, join the team.
