Men's Tennis Defeats No. 71 Penn State in Opener 4-3
January 29, 2011 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Matt Spindler's three-set victory at second singles clinched a 4-3 win for the Princeton men's tennis team over No. 71 Penn State in its dual-meet season opener.
The win is Princeton's first over Penn State since 2002, though the teams have only since played in 2008 and 2010. Penn State drops to 2-1 on the season with the loss.
Princeton swept the doubles point and split the first four singles matches, leaving Ravi Yegya-Raman's and Spindler's matches to decide it. Penn State's Russell Bader eked out a 7-5 win in the third set against Yegya-Raman to tie the match at 3-3, but Spindler, who survived a tiebreak in the second set, closed it out with a 6-2 win in the third set.
The victory is Princeton's first over a ranked team since Feb. 13, 2010, when it knocked off No. 69 Yale. The Tigers will have another chance at a win over a ranked opponent next Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Northwestern. The Wildcats are presently ranked No. 59, though a new ITA poll will come out Thursday.
