January 29, 2011 | Women's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 14 Florida State defeated the No. 37 Princeton women's tennis team 5-2 in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., sending the Tigers to a consolation match Sunday morning against No. 16 Texas.
The Tigers and Seminoles hadn't played since 1982, and Princeton will see another unfamiliar opponent in the Longhorns. Princeton and Texas met only once, in 1984.
Florida State won the first two doubles matches, while the match at No. 2 doubles, in which Monica Chow and Rachel Saiontz were competing for Princeton, was called at 5-5 with the doubles point clinched.
Blakely Ashley tied the match with her blanking of Manon Veldman at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, but three straight singles victories clinched it for the Seminoles.
Princeton's second point came from Chow, when she defeated Ruth Seaborne in a third-set tiebreak after the team victory had been clinched.
