January 30, 2011 | Women's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 37 Princeton won the doubles point, but No. 16 Texas swept the singles matches to take the consolation dual 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Tallahassee, Fla., site of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Texas grabbed the first doubles win, with Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Amanda Craddock defeating Princeton's Monica Chow and Rachel Saiontz 8-1, but the Tigers took the next two and the match's first team point. Blakely Ashley and Katherine Flanigan defeated Juliana Gajic and Maggie Mello 8-3 at third doubles, Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable upset 87th-ranked Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis 8-6 to win the point.
Texas roared back in singles play, with wins by Damico over Marable at second singles, Gajic over Flanigan at fifth singles, Mello over Saiontz at third singles and Craddock over Chow at fourth singles for the clincher. Princeton's Bartlett narrowly missed another upset, falling to Ellis, the No. 8 ranked singles player in the country by the ITA, in a third-set tiebreak.
The Tigers will travel to Tennessee next weekend for two matches in Nashville, first against Memphis Saturday and then against Vanderbilt, currently ranked No. 19, Sunday. A new ITA poll will be released Thursday.
