PRINCETON, N.J. (10/9/11) - ESPNU will televise the Princeton men's soccer team versus Lafayette on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.
Princeton has a dominating 25-3-3 mark in the series with Lafayette and has won the last five games, which includes a 3-0 win in Easton last year.
The Tigers are coming off of a tough loss to Brown from Saturday that sets them at 2-7-1 on the season. Princeton had a 2-1 lead before Brown scored with just eight minutes left to force overtime, and then the Bears scored the game winner in the second minute of the first overtime. In Princeton's last non-conference game, it handily defeated Seton Hall, 7-3. The Tigers average 14.1 shots per game and hold teams to 12.5. They have taken 60 percent of the corner kicks in their games this season. Senior Antoine Hoppenot leads the team offensively with four goals and a team-best five assists for 13 points. Junior Matt Sanner also has four goals, while freshman Cameron Porter has three goals and one assist for eight points. Junior David Dubow and sophomore Patrick O'Neil each have four points. Junior Max Gallin has started all but one game in goal, and has made 31 saves on 50 shots for a 1.98 goals against average and a .620 save percentage.
Lafayette is 6-2-3 overall and is undefeated in Patriot League play with a 2-0-1 record. The Leopards most recently defeated Lehigh 1-0 on Saturday and is riding a four-game unbeaten streak, their last loss on Sept. 17 at James Madison. Lafayette averages 8.7 shots per game and allows 11.0, and has given up 11 more corner kicks than its opponents. Junior Blake Fink sits atop the scoring column with three goals, two of which are game winners. Junior Kyle Scharfenberg has five points on two goals and one helper. Junior Sean Peckham has a team-best two assists and one goal for four points. The best component of the team is in goal. Senior Graham Heydt has started in eight games and has made 45 saves on 48 shots for a 0.36 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.
Princeton got goals from three different players as it posted a 3-0 shutout against Lafayette at Bourger Field on Tuesday, Oct. 12. The Tigers improved to 7-3-1 and won the last six games scoring three goals in each game. It marked the fourth time in program history that the team won six consecutive games scoring three or more goals in every game, most recently in when the 1977 team.
Princeton was able to grab a 1-0 lead in the first half and did not allow a single shot on goal. Senior defender Teddy Schneider tallied his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute. He and junior Colby Hahn had a give and go, and Schneider rifled the ball from the top corner of the 18-yard box and it sailed in on the near post.
Freshman Patrick O'Neil collected his first career goal in the 53rd minute. He dribbled through his defenders and took a shot from the top of the box for the unassisted goal to push Princeton's lead to two.
Junior Brandon Busch sealed the win in the 87th minute with help from freshman Dylan Bowman. Bowman delivered a cross into the box and Busch blasted the straight shot into the back of the net.
Lafayette's first shot on goal didn't come until the 51st minute when goalkeeper Sean Lynch stopped a close range shot by Sam Feldbaum. Lynch made his second save in the 77th minute on a restart from 25 yards out that took a quick hop and he collected a header in the 88th minute.
Lynch finished the game with three saves, while Andrew Pianko stopped five and a Leopard defender picked up one save. Princeton outshot Lafayette 18-10 and took three corners to Lafayette's two.
