October 11, 2011 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/11/11) - Junior Matt Sanner's goal in the 24th minute would decide the game as Princeton men's soccer earned a 2-1 win over Lafayette on Tuesday, Oct. 11 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in a live televised game on ESPNU.
Junior Mark Linnville assisted on both Princeton goals.
Linnville had ball down low on the right side and sent a cross into the box where Sanner headed in the deciding goal.
Princeton got on the board early with a goal in the 6th minute as the back line of sophomore Chris Benedict and Linnville teamed up for the tally. Known for his long throw-ins, Linnville let loose a short throw to Benedict who was alone about 25 yards out. Benedict lofted a shot that sailed into the upper 90.
Senior Antoine Hoppenot had a chance less than a minute later with a shot from the right side but the ball skirted just wide of the far post.
The Tigers had a 4-0 edge in shots with Lafayette unable to penetrate into its attacking third until the 19th minute when the Leopards scored on their first shot. Junior Kyle Scharfenberg buried a long strike from 30 yards out that skimmed off the fingertips of goalkeeper Max Gallin and into the upper right 90.
Princeton had an astounding 20-4 advantage in shots, with an 11-1 differential in the first half. The second half was scoreless with the Tigers taking nine shots to the Leopards' three.
The best chance in the second for the Tigers came in the 69th minute when Benedict hit the cross bar. Freshman Myles McGinley was pulled down right outside the 18-yard box and Benedict took the kick which just nicked the cross bar. Sanner had a header off a Linnville throw-in saved by Heydt in the 82nd minute and freshman Cameron Porter had a long ball go into the breadbasket of Heydt in the 84th minute.
Lafayette's best chance in the second half was in the 66th minute when Blake Fink had a shot that went wide of the far post as Gallin was off his mark as the crowd breathed an audible sigh of relief. Two minutes later Sean Peckham took a free kick on the goal line extended and Gallin punched the ball away to prevent any challenges. Lafayette would be stymied by the offside, getting called six times while Princeton was called just once.
Gallin would earn the win making one save for the Tigers, while Heydt stopped five for the Leopards.
Princeton improves to 3-7-1 on the season and returns to Ivy League play this Saturday, Oct. 15 when it hosts Columbia at 7 p.m.
