Columbia Tops Men's Soccer 2-1 with a Goal in 89th Minute
October 16, 2011 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/15/11) - The game looked like it was heading into overtime, before a goal by Columbia's Will Stamatis in the 89th minute would give the Lions a 2-1 win over Princeton in men's soccer on Saturday, Oct. 15 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Mike Mazzullo had the ball on the far touchline in front of the Tigers' bench and fed it up into the box to Will Young. Young was being defended but he shifted the ball off to Stamatis who was alone on the left side. Stamatis fired the ball to the right of goalkeeper Max Gallin and into the upper 90 for the win.
It's a scene Princeton is too familiar with this season - opponents scoring late to get a win. Brown scored in the 82nd minute to force overtime, St. John's scored in the 110th minute, Monmouth in the 81st and FDU in the 93rd.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute and would hang on to that 1-0 lead nearly the entire game. Nick Scott picked up a Mazzullo cross from 30 yards out and threaded the ball up the left flank to Henning Sauerbier who fired into the upper right corner.
There wasn't many scoring chances for either team in the first half. Princeton had eight shots in the first half but couldn't get any on goal, while Columbia had seven shots with two on frame, the second of which was easily grabbed by Gallin. Gallin's second stop would come in the 69th minute when he picked up a whiffed shot by Will Young.
Princeton had a couple of chances to get the equalizer in the second half. Senior Antoine Hoppenot had a low rolling shot hit the near post in the 51st minute. The Tigers were given two restarts just outside the 18-yard box, both taken by sophomore Chris Benedict. On the first set piece in the 56th minute Benedict rifled a shot that had to be pushed out of range by a leaping Alexander Aurrichio. It would be that second restart in the 84th minute that would get the Tigers on the scoreboard. Benedict's shot hit the player on the end of the man-made wall and bounced into the box. Sanner capitalized on the loose ball for the goal.
One minute later senior Manny Sardinha nearly gave the Tigers the lead but his hard-kicked shot was saved by Aurrichio.
Princeton had a 13-11 advantage in shots and took eight corners to Columbia's three. The Lions were called for five offsides to the Tigers' two. Both keepers would finish the game with two saves apiece.
Princeton falls to 3-8-1 and 0-3 in the league, while Columbia moves to 5-6-1 and 2-1 in league play. This is Columbia's first win the series since 2002, as the Lions end Princeton's eight-game unbeaten streak in the series.
Princeton will travel to Harvard next Saturday, Oct. 22 to face the Crimson at 1:30 p.m.
