A trio of Princeton alumni competed at the recent Fencing World Championships in Catania, Italy, with eventual aims at becoming a part of Team USA at next year's Olympic Summer Games.
On the women's side, Maya Lawrence '02 and Lindsay Campbell '02 competed in the epee, with Lawrence finishing 31st and Campbell 56th of 155 competitors. Lawrence advanced to the round of 32 in the direct elimination portion while Campbell advanced to the round of 64. The pair contributed to a 12th-place finish for Team USA in a 30-nation field for the team epee title.
Soren Thompson '05 placed 16th of 214 competitors, advancing to the round of 16 in the direct elimination bracket. Along the way, Thompson upset Hungarian Gabor Boczko, the event's No. 4 seed, before falling to eventual champion Paolo Pizzo of Italy. Thompson helped Team USA to a 15th-place finish of 41 countries.
The event ran from Oct. 9-16, and the qualification process for the U.S. fencing team's representation at the Olympic Games will run through next spring.
