Former Princeton men's soccer player and coach Bob Bradley has been named the head coach of the Egyptian national team it was announced on Saturday, Sept. 24 at press conference in Cairo.
Bradley replaces Hassan Shehata who left in June after Egypt failed to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup finals after winning the continental championship in 2010, its third consecutive title.
Bradley hopes to get Egypt to the World Cup for the first time since 1990. Egypt has made just two world cup appearances in 1934 and 1990 and are 0-2-2 in the Cup.
"It was great to hear that Bob will have the opportunity to lead another national team," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "I know I speak for many US coaches who admire his fearless spirit and willingness to break new ground for American coaches with such a big challenge. He did a great job coaching the US team and I know he will give everything he has to helping Egypt qualify for 2014."
Speaking from a familial perspective, Scott Bradley, the Princeton head baseball coach and Bob's brother, had this to say: "We're really proud of everything Bob has accomplished. We're going to miss having him around as much but we're excited for what lies ahead for him. It's an incredible chance for him to advance the sport of soccer in Egypt and it will likely have positive ramifications on U.S. soccer as well."
