October 05, 2011 | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (10/4/11) - Juniors David Dubow and Matt Sanner, along with senior Antoine Hoppenot, scored two goals apiece and the Princeton men's soccer team had its highest single-game goal total in 16 years in a 7-3 win over Seton Hall Tuesday night.
Princeton reached the seven-goal total for the first time since another 7-3 win, this one over Adelphi, in the 1995 season.
Dubow was making his second consecutive start, returning from an injury, and would score his first collegiate goals to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. He headed in a Mark Linnville throw-in in the 7th minute and in the 18th minute he redirected Patrick O'Neil's shot from 15 yards out that came in off a Myles McGinley corner kick, one of five the Tigers would take in the first half.
Hoppenot made it a 3-0 game in the 25th minute when he took a pass from senior Colby Hahn down the middle of the field, dribbled into the box and shot from 10 yards out.
Five minutes later Sanner padded the team's lead with its fourth goal. Hahn stole the ball away from a Seton Hall defender in front of the Pirates bench. He dished the ball off to Hoppenot who made his way to the goal. Sanner came sprinting up the field and buried the cross.
Seton Hall would squash the shutout with a goal in the 33rd minute, capitalizing on its first shot on goal. The Pirates were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out that was taken by Kai Greene. Greene put the ball in position and Anthony Reichwaldt sent it towards the goal where it was blocked but bounced back to his feet and he converted his second chance.
Sophomore Seth MacMillian, who was making his first career start in goal, made his first save in the 33rd minute and it was a big one. Less than a minute after Reichwaldt's goal Christian Battistesa rocketed a shot that was punched away by leaping MacMillan.
The Tigers would score a pair of goals within three minutes of each other in the second half to take a 6-1 lead.
Sanner scored his second of the night in the 56th minute when a cross from freshman Cameron Porter was not handled well by keeper Mario DeClerico. Sanner got to the loose ball and shot it into the back of the net.
Hoppenot scored his second in the 59th minute when he ran down the left flank, after getting the ball from sophomore Chris Benedict, and into the box where he chipped a shot into the goal.
Jason Wellington made it a 6-2 game in the 80th minute with a shot into the upper 90 with help from Reichwaldt.
Senior Zach Wyzgoski tallied his first career goal in the 88th minute with the Tigers' seventh goal of the night. Andrew Menendez earned his first point when he sent a long pass up the field to senior Manny Sardinha. Sardinha pushed the ball ahead to Wyzgoski who scored from 12 yards out.
With 42 seconds remaining Andrew LoManto would get the game's final goal when his shot skipped past keeper MacMillan.
Princeton outshot Seton Hall 16-12, including a 10-6 differential in the first half. The Tigers had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
MacMillan made two saves in his first career win from the Tigers.
DeClerico allowed six goals on eight shots and was replaced by Kevin Bonder in the 71st minute. Bonder would allow the one shot he faced as Seton Hall drops to 4-5-2 on the season.
Princeton's seven goals ties the league record for goals in a game this season as the Tigers join Yale in scoring seven.Princeton improves to 2-6-1 overall and will travel to play Brown on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
