Alumni Fencers Compete in International Events
October 07, 2011 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Already in October, Jim Adams '61 helped USA Fencing with his bronze-medal performance, and his fellow Princeton fencing alumni are poised for more.
Adams started the month in Porec, Croatia with a second-place finish in the men's 70+ epee and a third-place finish in the men's 70+ foil event at the Veteran World Championships as the top American finisher. Adams lost in each event to Russian Gari Aftandilov, who won both golds. In losing the foil semifinal, Adams scored more touches against Aftandilov than any other of the Russian's opponents. In the direct elimination portion of the epee event, seeded fourth, Adams defeated one opponent from Japan and two from England before reaching the final. In the foil, seeded 13th, Adams defeated a former Hungarian senior world champion and a former world senior silver medalist from Luxembourg before fencing Aftandilov. Each of Adams' wins was in overtime.
By completing the dual-medal feat, Adams became only the second American to win two medals in the same veterans competition. Adams, who lives in Rockville, Md., is also a parent of a Princeton alumna as his daughter Lisa graduated in 1988.
The Senior World Championships in Catania, Italy will run from October 9-16 and will also feature Princeton alumni fencers including Soren Thompson '05, Maya Lawrence '02 and Lindsey Campbell '02. The event will help decide which fencers make Team USA's squad at the Olympic Games next summer in London. To follow the event's results, click here.
