PRINCETON, N.J. (11/15/11) - The Princeton men's hockey team faces its toughest weekend to date as it travels to Central New York to take on a pair of ranked teams. Princeton takes on No. 18 Cornell on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., and No. 17 Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.
Princeton split last weekend's series with a one-goal loss to St. Lawrence followed by a 3-0 shutout of Clarkson. The Tigers are 2-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the ECAC. Junior defender Michael Sdao leads the team in scoring with four goals and one assists for five points. Senior defender Derrick Pallis and sophomore Andrew Calof have five assists apiece. Juniors Rob Kleebaum and Eric Meland along with sophomore Jack Berger each contribute four points. In goal, sophomore Sean Bonar and junior Mike Condon have both seen time. Bonar has a 2-2-1 record and a 2.39 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. Condon is 0-2 with a 3.56 GAA and an .873 save percentage. The Tigers' combined special teams ranks third in the league, with the power play converting 7 of 26 (27%) and penalty kill erasing 19 of 22 (86.4%) penalties.Cornell has a 78-51-7 edge in the all-time series that began over 100 years ago. The teams split the series last year with Princeton taking a 2-1 overtime game in Ithaca in November, and Cornell winning a 2-1 game in Princeton two months later. The Tigers are 3-2 in the last five games against the Big Red.
Cornell is ranked No. 18 in the latest USCHO.com poll. The Big Red is 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the ECAC after posting a road weekend sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth last week. Cornell also defeated Yale, with its lone loss to Brown. Junior defender Nick D'Agostino and freshman Brian Ferlin sit atop the scoring column with eight points apiece. Juniors Greg Miller and John Esposito add seven and six, respectively. Sophomore Andy Iles has been the only netminder for the Big Red this season. He has a 3.23 GAA and an .870 save percentage. Cornell's power play has converted 5 of 17 (29%) and its penalty kill has killed of 15 of 22 (68%).
Colgate holds a slim 47-43-6 edge in the all-time series, that began in 1935. Princeton swept the Raiders last year winning 4-3 and 5-4. The Tigers are 3-2 in the last five meetings.
Colgate, ranked No. 17 in the USCHO. com poll, enters the weekend with a 6-4-1 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the ECAC. In conference the Raiders has wins over Brown and Dartmouth and losses to Yale and Harvard. Senior Austin Smith leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. Three of Smith's goals have been short handed. Sophomore Chris Wagner has 10 points on three goals and a team-best seven assists. Junior Robbie Bourdon adds eight points. Sophomore Eric Mikalik boasts a 5-3 record as the Raiders' starting goalie. He has a 3.00 GAA and an .896 save percentage. Senior Alex Elvin has played in three games and has a 1.63 GAA and a .936 save percentage. The team's power play has scored on 12 of 63 (19%) and penalty kill has killed off 41 of 52 penalties (78%).
