Fencers to Open Season at Penn State
November 18, 2011 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
As the team has done annually since 2005, the Princeton fencers will head to Penn State to compete in an individual event to open the season.
The Princeton fencing Twitter account will be providing live updates from the event.
The Tigers will be competing against fencers from Cornell, Duke, Harvard, James Madison, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn, Temple and Yale. The women's competition will take place Saturday while the men will go Sunday.
Princeton will look to build on its fourth-place finish at the NCAA finals a year ago, a placement that was headlined by the Ivy League champion women's team finishing first among all women's programs.
The Tiger men return two of their three All-Ivy League honorees from last season including Ivy Most Outstanding Performer senior foilist Alexander Mills and second-team epeeist junior Jonathan Yergler. Mills and Yergler join sophomore saberist Philip Dershwitz and junior foilist Robert Malcolm as four NCAA competitors from last season who return for 2011-12.
All six Princeton women who competed at the NCAA finals will be back, including saberists junior Eliza Stone and sophomore Diamond Wheeler, sophomore foilists Eve Levin and Hyun-Kyung Yuh, and junior epeeists Hannah Safford and Phoebe Caldwell. Safford and Stone were first-team All-Ivy honorees last year, while Levin, Yuh, Wheeler and junior saberist Joanna Cichomski were second-teamers.
Princeton's first team competition will take place at Penn State on Dec. 3 for a day of dual meets.
