Kolodzik Scores Pair Of Wins, But Wrestling Drops Duo At Rider
November 18, 2011 | Wrestling
Senior Daniel Kolodzik has made qualifying for the NCAA Championships a major individual goal this year, and he took a solid step forward Friday during Princeton's first day of dual competitions. He won two individual matches during a tough team day for the Tiger wrestling team, which lost to both Rider (29-10) and Wisconsin (29-9) Friday in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Kolodzik opened his day with a 13-5 major decision over Rider's Ramon Santiago, though it was not enough to overcome a tough start to the team match. Princeton trailed 15-0 after three matches, a run which ended with two-time NCAA qualifier Garrett Frey getting pinned by Rider's Chuck Zeisloft late in the first period.
Princeton freshman Chris Perez got the Tigers on the board with a 4-3 win over Vinny Fava, and Kolodzik followed two matches later with his major decision. It would be Princeton's only bonus points of the match, though sophomore Daniel Santoro came close. He gave Princeton its final win of the dual match with a 12-5 win over Brandon Lintner at 184.
There would be no time to rest for Princeton, which immediately took on Wisconsin in the second match of the tri-meet. Senior Kurt Brendel tried to give Princeton an early spark, but he fell 3-2 at 197 to Jackson Hein. Frey won a wild 10-7 decision over Shane McQuade; after dominating most of the first period, Frey got thrown to his back early in the second and had to fight off the pin. He ultimately did and held strong at the end for the victory.
Perez lost an 8-5 decision, but sophomore Adam Krop, coming off his third-place finish at the Binghamton Open, got Princeton back on the board with an 8-4 decision over Tom Glen. Kolodzik topped Shawn Perry 7-5 two matches later, and Princeton found itself trailing by only five points with three matches remaining.
The Badgers responded, though, scoring two pins and a decision to clinch the 29-9 win.
Princeton will return to the mats Sunday when it heads to Philadelphia to compete in the Keystone Open.
