Bonar Makes Career-High 42 Saves but No. 17 Colgate Too Much
November 19, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/19/11) - Sophomore netminder Sean Bonar made a career-high 42 saves but No. 17 Colgate was too much to handle as the Princeton men's hockey teams falls 4-1 at Starr Rink on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Junior Rob Kleebaum scored less than two minutes into the third to make it a one-goal game, but Colgate added two more goals within 2:06 to make it 4-1.
Colgate converted on its third power play of the game at 14:17 when Austin Mayer lit the lamp. Thomas Larkin had a shot blocked and it came out into the right face off circle and Kevin McNamara controlled it and put it in the slot for Mayer.
Austin Smith scored his first of two with just 26 seconds left in the first frame when he skated up center ice and went five hole on Bonar.
Kleebaum prevented the Colgate shutout with a goal at 1:46. A shot by Colgate hit the chest of freshman Kevin Mills. Mills put the puck on his stick and sent it to the right side to Kleebaum who skated down the ice for the breakaway goal.
After Colgate controlled the pace of the first two periods, the Tigers came out of the locker room and dominated much of the final period, and finished with 16 shots in the period to Colgate's 14.
Two special team goals by the Raiders would take the wind out of Princeton's sail.
Colgate converted its second power play goal at 9:50 when John Lidgett scored during a scrum. Smith would add an unassisted short-handed goal at 11:56.
Eric Mihalik made 31 saves in goal for Colgate. Bonar's 42 saves easily beat his previous best of 31, which came in Jan. 2011 at Clarkson.
Colgate had a 46-32 edge in shots and was 2 for 6 on the power play. Princeton was 0 for 3 on the man advantage.
Colgate is the fourth ranked opponent Princeton has played this season, and the second straight after facing No. 18 Cornell yesterday.
Princeton falls to 2-6-1 overall, 2-5 in league play, while Colgate moves to 8-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the ECAC.
The Tigers take to the skies next weekend for the Denver Cup Classic. Princeton will play the host school on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. (local time).
