November 26, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
DENVER (11/25/11) - The Princeton men's hockey team dropped a 3-0 game at No. 10 Denver in the first game of the Denver Cup Classic on Friday, Nov. 25 at Magness Arena.
The Tigers outshot the Pioneers 38-28 but couldn't sneak one by netminder Juho Olkinuora who finished the game with 38 saves.
Denver got on the scoreboard early, scoring at 1:41 of the first period on its first shot on goal. Zac Lazzara passed the puck from the right of Princeton goalie Sean Bonar into the slot and Nick Shore flipped the puck over his shoulder.
The Pioneers would net their next two goals on the power play.
Denver won the puck off the boards and slid it behind the net to Jason Zucker. Zucker sent the puck up from behind the net to Drew Shore who was waiting on the doorstep to make it 2-0 at 8:29 of the first.
Princeton would pull Bonar in goal right after the goal. He was replaced by junior Mike Condon who would play the remainder of the game.
With 20 seconds left in the second frame, Denver struck again. Nick Shore had the puck on the right of the goal and sent it cross ice to the left side where a wide open Joey LaLeggia found the back of the net.
When Denver got called for high sticking at 15:36 of the third, Princeton called a timeout and sat Condon for the extra skater. The Tigers would put five shots in on Olkinuora and had two blocked. Denver sent the puck down the length of the ice three times, with the puck missing twice and hitting the post once.
Condon made some big stops for the Tigers and finished with 23 saves in 47 minutes. Bonar made two saves in his 8:29 in net.
Princeton falls to 2-7-1 overall, while Denver improves to 6-3-3.
The Tigers will face Providence tomorrow, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m., local time at Magness Arena.
