Wrestling Opens Home Schedule With Tough Tri-Meet Saturday
November 30, 2011 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team entered Thanksgiving break with the momentum of a strong run in the 2011 Keystone Open. The Tigers will try to bring some of that momentum into Dillon Gym Saturday, where they will open their home schedule against two tough opponents.
Princeton (0-2) will host Binghamton (6-0) and Old Dominion (4-1) Saturday in their first of nine dual matches at Dillon Gym this weekend. The Binghamton match will open competition at 1 p.m., while the Old Dominion match will follow at 3 p.m. Please note the time change for the Old Dominion match, as it has been moved up from 4 p.m.
Fans who can't make either match can still watch online live on GoPrincetonTigers.TV. You can log in here.
Princeton opened its dual meet season two weeks ago, when it dropped matches to both Rider (29-9) and Wisconsin (29-10). The results didn't sit well with sixth-year head coach Chris Ayres, but his outlook changed dramatically two days later. With six individual placewinners, Princeton took fourth as a team at the 2011 Keystone Open in a day Ayres felt was "the best we've wrestled since I've been here."
Princeton was led by co-captains Garrett Frey and Daniel Kolodzik, both of whom reached their respective finals before falling to Top-15 opponents. Frey, who is 13-3 already this season, avenged one of his earlier losses in the process with an 8-6 win over Rider's Chuck Zeisloft. Kolodzik earned a pin, technical fall and major decision to reach the double-digit mark for wins.
Kolodzik won't have an easy time of it this weekend, as he'll see two more Top-20 wrestlers in his weight class. Senior Justin Lister is currently ranked sixth for the Binghamton Bearcats, who swept Purdue, Army, Arizona State and Eastern Michigan to complete a perfect day at the Northeast Duals. Lister makes up the second half of a dangerous double; teammate Donnie Vinson is currently ranked ninth nationally and will provide a tough test for Princeton junior Zach Bintliff, who has six wins on the season.
Old Dominion, which has a win over Iowa State already this season, is led by 174-pound senior Te Edwards, who is ranked ninth nationally. Sophomore John Nicholson is ranked 15th on the season and has eight victories already.
