Wrestling Heads To Bison Duals Saturday, Anticipates Top-20 Showdown At 125
December 16, 2011 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team will wrestle its final dual matches of the 2011 portion of the schedule this Saturday when it heads to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bison Duals. Princeton will wrestle against Bucknell, Central Michigan and Sacred Heart during the day.
Princeton will open the day with an 11 a.m. match against host Bucknell. At approximately 1 p.m., the Tigers will take on Central Michigan. The day concludes with a match against Sacred Heart, scheduled for 3 p.m.
Princeton is 1-4 on the season, with its victory coming two weeks ago against a talented Old Dominion squad. The Tigers are led by junior Garrett Frey, who broke into the Top 20 at 125 this past week, and senior Daniel Kolodzik, who had a win over a Top-15 opponent to push the Tigers past Old Dominion.
A pair of sophomores have already reached the double-digit win mark this season. Sophomore Adam Krop has 11 wins and has gone 3-2 in duals at 141. Classmate Dan Santoro, who dropped from 197 to 184 this season, has more than doubled his win total from last season with 10 victories. Freshman Chris Perez will look to join that group Saturday; the Tiger 133-pounder has nine wins this season, including three in his last four matches.
Princeton's 18-16 victory over Bucknell last season was called "the best win in our time here" by head coach Chris Ayres. Victories by Frey, Kolodzik and current 149-pounder Zach Bintliff helped Princeton to the win. The Bison is currently 0-5 this season, though 125-pounder Austin Miller has gotten off to a 7-4 start.
Central Michigan comes into the Bison Duals with the best record, a 7-2 mark, and it has three wrestlers ranked in the Top 20. Peter Sturgeon is ranked sixth at heavyweight, while Ben Bennett is ranked eighth at 184. The matchup of the day will likely come at 125 between Princeton and Central Michigan, as the Chippewas have the 18th-ranked wrestler in Joe Roth. The Central Michigan sophomore is 17-3 on the season, while Princeton's Frey, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is 16-3 this season.
Sacred Heart is 0-7 this season. Its lone starter with a winning record is Andrew Polidore, who is 5-4 at 133 pounds.
Following Saturday's matches, Princeton will be off until the prestigious Midlands Championships, held Dec. 29-30 at Northwestern.
