The Princeton University men's ice hockey team got what it so desperately needed Saturday - goals and a win.
The Tigers found the back of the net three times to snap a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win in the Denver Cup over a Providence team that was receiving votes in the national poll.
"We have to rally off our last win," said PU head coach Bob Prier, whose team improved to 2-6-1. "They played with more instincts. They played a little looser. We have a collection of young men that want to win and want to win so bad that maybe they're gripping a little tight.
"We're into the last phase before Christmas break. We have four games, three at home. It's a nice opportunity to right the ship."
The Tigers open three straight at home with Rensselaer 7 p.m. tonight at Hobey Baker Rink. They host Union 4 p.m. Saturday in a game that features the second Skate with the Tigers session of the season. Fans can bring their skates and get on the ice after the Union game to meet and skate with Princeton players. Free autograph books will be handed out.
"I'm optimistic about the remainder of the season," said Prier, who is in his first year at the helm. "Nothing breeds confidence more than victories. Winning has to become a habit. With that will come individual confidence. That's what we have to strive for. We need guys confident to make four- to five-foot passes in traffic. We want everyone to want the puck."
