Men's Hockey Team Falls 4-1 at Dartmouth
February 12, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. (2/12/11) - The 17th-ranked Dartmouth Big Green took advantage of a slow start from the 20th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team and jumped out to an early lead in a 4-1 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena. Mike Kramer scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season in the loss.
Dartmouth took the game's first five shots and scored on two of them before the Tigers would manage a shot on goal. Adam Estoclet converted on the power play at 6:12 and 15 seconds later Dustin Walsh made it 2-0 when his shot through a screen eluded Princeton netminder Sean Bonar.
Princeton took its time out midway through the first period looking to regroup and Princeton seemed to benefit following the call, garnering eight of its nine first period shots after the power play and cutting the lead to a goal when Kramer scored his eighth goal in as many games in the final minute of the period when he deflected Kevin Ross' point shot. Cam Ritchie also assisted on the goal.
Dartmouth quelled any momentum Princeton brought into the second period with a solid start to the period and again limited Princeton chances early and converted on an opportunity of its own when Matt Linblad put in a rebound at 5:18 after Eric Robinson shot was blocked in front of Bonar.
Princeton pushed to start the third period and had a few good chances early, but couldn't crack Mello. Dartmouth played defensively in the period but jumped at its chances and put the game out of reach when Linblad netted his second of the game at 7:20 after a nice play from Connor Goggin to pick off a Princeton pass and set up Linblad on a 2 on 1.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton 33-29 in the game. Bonar made 29 saves in the loss while Mello stopped 28 saves to get the win.
Princeton is now 14-9-2 overall and 9-7-2 in the league with six league games remaining. Princeton falls to sixth in the league standings, one point behind fifth-place Rensselaer and two behind fourth-place Cornell. Dartmouth now hold a four-point edge on Princeton.
Princeton returns home to Hobey Baker Rink next weekend to host ECAC and Ivy rivals Brown and Yale in the final home weekend of the regular season. Princeton hosts Brown on Friday night at 7 p.m.
