Women's Fencing Captures Second Straight Ivy Title
February 13, 2011 | Women's Fencing
Columbia (5-1) and Harvard (4-2) gave the Princeton women their closest matches and finished second and third, while Penn (3-3) was fourth, Cornell (2-4) fifth, Brown (1-5) sixth and Yale (0-6) seventh.
Victories over Cornell, Brown and Harvard came Saturday, setting up a morning showdown with Columbia for control of the Ivy League race.
Princeton's foil squad won 6 of 9 bouts, while 3-0 efforts from saberist Eliza Stone and epeeist Phoebe Caldwell helped the Tigers take control of the Ivy race with a 15-12 win over the Lions. Victories of 20-7 over Yale and 17-10 over Penn followed, the last of which clinched the outright Ivy League championship for Princeton.
The title is Princeton's fifth, after a shared title with Yale and Columbia in 1999 and outright titles in 2000, 2001 and 2010.
Stone, who was one of three Ivy fencers alongside Harvard's Caroline Vloka and Columbia's Loweye Diedro, finished 16-2 on the weekend to win first-team All-Ivy League honors, and epeeist Hannah Safford, who led all Ivy competitors in her weapon with a 15-3 record, also won first-team honors.
Saberists Diamond Wheeler and Joanna Cichomski and foilists Eve Levin and Hyun-Kyung Yuh were second-team honorees. Cichomski and Wheeler each finished with a record of 13-5, while Levin was Princeton's top foilist at 13-5 and Yuh was a match behind at 12-6.
The meet began the championship portion of the schedule for the women's team, which was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the monthly USFCA poll released Jan. 20. Following a Feb. 27 meet at Temple, the Tigers will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Drew University on March 12.
