Wrestling Looks For Positive Finish To Regular Season, Home Schedule
February 18, 2011 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team knows that its biggest weekend is still to come, but it will be looking to conclude both its 2010-11 home schedule and its regular season on a high note Saturday when it hosts Hofstra (1) and Boston University (3) at Dillon Gym.
The Tigers, who have battled injury issues over the past few weeks, are 5-10 and will be looking for positive momentum as they prepare for the 2011 EIWA Championships, held the first weekend of March at Bucknell. Princeton will likely have at least one seeded wrestler in 125-pound sophomore Garrett Frey (24-7), while junior Daniel Kolodzik (157, 20-13) and senior Travis Erdman (184, 15-13) could improve their seeding chances with a strong Saturday.
For Erdman, it will be his last day of competition at Dillon Gym. The former All-Ivy honoree, Erdman was part of Princeton's exciting comeback win over Brown in the team's last match at Dillon; despite trailing 12-3 after four matches, Princeton went on a late run, which included a pin from Erdman and wins from both freshman Daniel Santoro (197) and Charles Fox (285) to earn a five-point win over Brown.
Hofstra is currently ranked 23rd nationally and has won 11 of its last 13 matches, including one at Rider this past week. The Pride hasn't wrestled against Princeton since 1999, but it will lead off a Dillon doubleheader at 1 p.m. The highlight match should come at 125, when 20th-ranked Steve Bonanno (20-10) will likely take on Frey, ranked 18th nationally.
Boston University comes into the weekend with a 10-5 record and has won seven straight, including a pair over Brown and Harvard. The Terriers are led by 133-pound junior Freddy Santaite, who is 15-4 on the season, and 184-pound junior Brock Mantella, who is 23-10.
