Junior Olympic Success, Temple Meet Ahead in Fencing Update
February 23, 2011 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
One busy weekend will lead to another for the Princeton fencing teams as the Tigers continue toward the NCAA championship schedule next month.
A handful of Tigers were in Dallas, Texas from Feb. 18-21 for a Junior Olympic competition that included five top-10 finishes. Eve Levin and Ambika Singh, both freshman foilists, tied for third of 145 participants. Sophomore epeeist Hannah Safford placed ninth of 161, while saberist Philip Dershwitz took ninth in a field of 154.
Jonathan Yergler and Edward Kelley, both sophomore epeeists, earned enough points throughout the U.S. fencing season schedule to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Mer Monte, Jordan from Mar. 29-April 6. Kelley placed fifth and Yergler placed 21st of 213 at the Junior Olympics.
Both Princeton teams also moved in the USFCA rankings in the newly released February poll.
Princeton's men moved down one spot from sixth to seventh, behind Notre Dame, Harvard, St. John's, Penn State, Ohio State and Penn, and ahead of Duke, Yale and Stanford. With Columbia, five of the six Ivy teams are ranked or receiving votes in the latest poll.
Fresh off their second straight Ivy League championship, Princeton's women moved up one spot to third behind Notre Dame and Ohio State and ahead of St. John's, Penn State, Northwestern, Temple, Harvard, Duke and Columbia. With Penn, Cornell, Brown and Yale, all seven Ivy programs are ranked or receiving votes.
