February 03, 2011 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
A dual with No. 1 Notre Dame will highlight a busy weekend of competition for Princeton's fencing teams when they head to Northwestern this weekend.
Princeton's women are ranked No. 4 and the men are ranked No. 6 in the latest USFCA poll released Jan. 20, while both Irish teams hold down the top spot. In addition to Saturday's match against Notre Dame, both Princeton teams will have the opportunity to take on other top-10 foes. The men will face No. 5 Ohio State and No. 10 Stanford, both also Saturday, while the women will take on No. 10 Ohio State Saturday and No. 7 Northwestern and No. 9 Temple Sunday.
The men's complete list of opponents is as follows: Wayne State, Caltech, Stanford, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Ohio State Saturday, Fairleigh Dickinson, Lawrence, Northwestern, Cleveland State, Temple, Detroit and UC San Diego Sunday. The women will face Wayne State, Notre Dame, Northwestern, North Carolina, Stanford and Ohio State Saturday, followed by Cleveland State, Detroit, UC San Diego, Caltech and Lawrence Sunday.
A year ago at this meet, Princeton's teams combined to finish 23-3. This season, Princeton's teams are a combined 9-1, all taking place at the Sacred Heart day of duals on Dec. 5. The only defeat was a 15-12 shortcoming by the women's team to No. 2 Penn State.
The meet comes just one week before Princeton hosts the Ivy League championships, now a two-day, one-weekend event at a single site.
