Wrestling Goes Overtime, Rallies Past Brown 21-16
February 06, 2011 | Wrestling
Sophomore Charles Fox had a chance to create a moment for Princeton wrestling, and he wasn't about to let it slip. In front of an energized capacity crowd on Alumni Day, Fox clinched a 21-16 Tiger victory over Brown with an overtime takedown in the final match of the meet.
The win, which came in spite of an early 12-3 Princeton deficit, clinched a split for the Tigers in their Ivy opening day; in the morning, Harvard rallied past Princeton for a 21-15 victory.
Princeton is now 5-7 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy League, and will head to The Palestra Sunday at 1 to take on No. 20 Penn. The afternoon victory is the second consecutive for Princeton over Brow; that hadn't happened since 1986-87.
Garrett Frey opened the match with a 7-1 decision over Billy Watterson. He led 1-0 entering the third period, but scored a takedown and three near-fall points to take control of the match. He added 1:02 in riding time to clinch a 7-1 win.
Junior Tony Comunale's attempt at a perfect day ended in an overtime loss to Brown freshman Cortlandt Choate, who scored a takedown to win 6-4 at 133. Comunale evened the match with a third-period reversal, but Choate had the final takedown to win.
Grant Overcashier scored an early takedown at 141 and carried that to a 5-2 win over Princeton's Adam Krop, and Brown's Giuseppi Lanzi rallied from an early takedown and scored a second-period pin to defeat Tiger freshman Brandon Rolnick.
At that point, Princeton trailed 12-3, the same score it led Harvard by after the same number of matches. The Tigers showed their own fight this time, winning five of the last six to pull out a thriller.
Junior Daniel Kolodzik was in control of his 157-point match against Philip Marano, scoring a takedown in every period and earning an 8-1 win. Brown picked up a major decision at 165, but Tiger junior Andy Lowy followed with an 8-2 win of his own. Like Kolodzik, he scored a takedown in every period and added an escape and a point for riding time to win the match and cut the team score to 16-9.
That set up a rematch at 184 between Princeton senior captain Travis Erdman and Brown's Ziad Kharbush. One year ago, Erdman trailed in their 174-pound match at Brown before hitting a headlock and scoring a pin that gave Princeton the winning edge in a 21-15 team victory.
It was déjà vu for Erdman, who again found himself trailing after one period by a 2-1 score. He scored an escape and a takedown in the second to grab the lead, but with the team needing as many points as possible, he made sure he went for the pin. Kharbush took bottom in the third and never made it out, getting pinned 59 seconds in to cut the deficit to one point.
Freshman Dan Santoro picked up the biggest win of his young career, rallying from a 1-0 third period deficit with an escape and a late takedown of Brandon Schull to score a 3-1 win. Santoro, who had fought through a tough seven-minute match against Harvard only to fall by one point, showed impressive resilience with the comeback win in the final 30 seconds and gave Princeton its first lead since the opening match.
With the team score at 18-16, the heavyweight winner was going to take the match. Both Fox and Brown's Tyler Cowman managed an escape through seven minutes, meaning a long day of Tiger wrestling went overtime. Nobody in Orange and Black minded a bit, as Fox scored the overtime takedown to clinch a 3-1 win and a 21-16 team victory.
