Fencing Teams Close Northwestern Duals with Sunday Sweep
February 07, 2011 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Princeton's fencing teams closed out the two-day Northwestern duals event with a sweep of Sunday's matches, the women winning all six and the men winning all five.
Princeton's women's team, ranked No. 4 in the latest USFCA poll, picked up a 16-11 victory over No. 9 Temple while also defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, Lawrence, Northwestern, UC San Diego and Detroit. The men, ranked No. 6 by the USFCA, knocked off Cleveland State, Detroit, UC San Diego, Caltech and Lawrence.
All three weapons were hugely successful for each team, as only once, when Temple's women eked out a 5-4 win in the epee, did a Princeton team not win a weapon on the way to an overall team victory.
Princeton's men improve to 14-2 on the season, while the women are now 14-3. Each Tiger team will head into next weekend's Ivy League Championship at Jadwin Gym looking to defend their 2010 titles, the first for either program since 2001.
Next weekend's Ivy League fencing championships will get underway on the main level of Jadwin Gym at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with three rounds of bouts. Princeton's women will go first, taking on Cornell, while both Princeton teams will then face Brown at 11:45 a.m. and Harvard at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, the Tigers will take on Columbia at 10 a.m., have a bye for the 11:15 a.m. round, face Yale at 1:15 p.m. and close it out against Penn at 2:30.
Admission for adults is $8 for a two-day pass and $5 for one day. Students will get in for $5 for two days and $3 each day.
