GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/17/11) - The Princeton baseball team got a solid seven-plus innings from starter Zak Hermans and used a three-run sixth inning to take a 4-2 win on Thursday afternoon against North Carolina A&T at Greensboro's War Memorial Stadium.
Princeton was held without a hit in the game's first four innings, but was able to push across its first run in the fourth thanks to a walk to Nate Baird, a passed ball and two groundouts as Sam Mulroy drove in Baird with a grounder to A&T's pitcher.
North Carolina A&T had hits in each of the first three innings leaving runners on base as Hermans got out of trouble. He couldn't dodge giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth though as three straight singles with two outs knotted up the game.
Princeton's first hit came in the fifth inning, but it wasn't until the sixth that Princeton regained the lead by scoring three runs on three hits and taking advantage of one Aggie error. Baird again started the rally as he doubled with one out. He came around to score when Matt Bowman reached on an error and Bowman would score on a Mike Ford single after stealing second. Ford added the final Princeton run of the inning when Jonathan York tripled to left field.
NCA&T added a final run in the eighth inning as it took advantage of a single and two Princeton errors in the field, but reliever David Palms got the final out needed to quell the rally and then retired the side in the ninth to earn the save.
Hermans improved to 1-1 with the win as he allowed one earned run on nine hits in seven and two-thirds innings on the mound, while Palms got the final four outs without allowing a hit or walk for the save.
Princeton is now 3-7 overall and will continue its Spring Break trip on Friday when Washington, D.C., area native Matt Bowman takes the mound in the series opener of a three-game series at Georgetown.
