March 18, 2011 | Baseball
BETHESDA, Md. (3/18/11) - The Princeton baseball team had leads of 5-2 and 7-6 but Georgetown forced extra innings with a run in the ninth and then defeated the Tigers with one in the 10th on Friday afternoon at Georgetown's Shirley Povich Field. It was a back-and-forth game that saw four leads changes before Georgetown's final rally for the win.
Down a run in the fourth inning, Princeton scored three times on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. Princeton had its first four runners reach in the inning as a walk to Mike Ford and singles from Sam Mulroy and Andrew Whitener loaded the bases. Steve Harrington then drove in a run with a single. Another run came home on Alec Keller's fielder's choice and Nate Baird brought in the third run with a single.
Georgetown added another run in the bottom of the fourth before the Tigers tacked on two more in the fifth. Ford drove in the first run with a single and Whitener brought in a run with a sac fly. The Hoyas got back a run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer on the first pitch of the inning to make the score 5-3. Georgetown then went ahead in the with a three-spot as the Hoyas used two hits and two walks and took advantage of a Princeton error to bring home three runs and take a 6-5 lead.
Princeton promptly answered though in the top of the seventh inning with two runs of its own. Ford was hit by a pitch to start the inning and that pitch was followed up by a two-run homer for Mulroy. It was his third home run of the season.
Princeton held the lead until the bottom of the ninth when a leadoff single came around to score on a sac fly. In the top of the 10th, Princeton threatened and loaded the bases with one out, but the inability to bring in the go-ahead run came back to hurt the Tigers as the Hoyas netted the winning run in its next at-bat. Three straight batters reached to start the inning and the fourth batter singled to bring in the winning run.
The loss moves Princeton to 3-8. The Tigers will continue their series at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
