Softball Ends Spring Trip with Shutout of Utah
March 20, 2011 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Michelle Tolfa held Utah's batters to three hits over 6 2/3 innings of relief Sunday morning as the Princeton softball team ended its spring trip with a 1-0 win over Utah in the University of Maryland's tournament.
After a pair of early walks by starter Liza Kuhn, Tolfa (3-3) entered with one out and two on in the first inning and got a strikeout and a pop-up to end the threat.
Utah's (12-15) Naomi Amu (3-5) was nearly Tolfa's equal, but Princeton broke through in the fifth. Lizzy Pierce had a one-out double and Sarah Rounsifer followed her with an outfield single to score the day's only run.
The fifth was one of just two innings, along with the first inning, in which Princeton (7-9) got a runner into scoring position. Tolfa was 7 for 7 in stranding runners at second or third base to complete the shutout.
The Tigers will open their home season next Sunday against Marist at Class of 1895 Field with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
