Stone, Tigers Move to Fourth at NCAA Fencing Meet
March 26, 2011 | Women's Fencing
The top four of the 24 saber fencers will advance to the direct elimination portion of the competition once the round robin is complete. The direct elimination bouts will decide the individual medalists in each weapon.
Stone is one of four Princeton fencers in line for All-America honors if they can hold their position in the standings through the end of the 23 round-robin bouts. Freshmen foilists Eve Levin and Hyun-Kyung Yuh stand seventh and ninth, as Levin won 9 of 14 bouts Saturday and Yuh 8 of 14. Sophomore epeeist Phoebe Caldwell stands seventh after winning 9 of 14, and Princeton's two remaining competitiors are within striking distance of the top 12 standing needed for All-America honors. Sophomore Hannah Safford is tied for 13th with seven epee wins, and freshman saberist Diamond Wheeler is in 14th place with six wins.
Princeton is among a tightly packed group of three teams between fourth and sixth place in the team standings, as the Tigers and Ohio State have 114 wins each between the men's and women's competition and Harvard has 111. Notre Dame remained in control of its pursuit of a first national title since 2005, holding 139 victories, just ahead of two-time defending champion Penn State's 133. St. John's is in third with 123, and Penn is behind the Ohio State-Princeton-Harvard pack with 79 wins.
