Bloom Tips 4-3 Decision in Ivy-Opening Men's Tennis Win

PRINCETON -- Rookie Augie Bloom came through for the Princeton men's tennis team Saturday afternoon, putting away a victory at fourth singles that allowed the Tigers to take a 4-3 win over Penn and win their Ivy League opener.
With the team score tied at 3-3, Bloom gutted through a third-set victory at fourth singles over Penn's Phil Law to take the match 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
The victory, which improves the Tigers to 8-6 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League, is 62nd-ranked Princeton's third win over an ITA-ranked opponent in four tries this season, as Penn came into the match ranked No. 60 in the nation and left with just its second loss against 10 wins.
Penn held the early advantage after coming back to win the doubles point. Michael Lin and Matt Spindler won their match 8-1 at third doubles, but Penn took the other two to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
Matija Pecotic, Spindler and Dan Richardson won their singles matches at first, second and fifth singles, respectively, to put the Tigers on the brink of victory. Penn initially avoided a loss when Nikola Kocovic defeated Princeton's Alex Faust at sixth singles in three sets, but Bloom won in the match's final contest.
Princeton will travel to Brown and Yale next Friday and Saturday to continue the Ivy League season. Penn and Princeton are two of the four Ivy teams ranked in the latest ITA poll, alongside No. 55 Cornell and No. 74 Dartmouth.
