PRINCETON -- Central Connecticut State swept the Princeton softball team in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Class of 1895 Field with the Blue Devils winning the opener 5-4 in eight innings and the nightcap 19-4 in five.
CCSU improves to 12-9-1 on the season while Princeton falls to 8-12.
The Tigers rallied with a three-run sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead in the opener with two of those runs coming on an Alex Peyton double. CCSU, however, pushed one across in the top of the seventh to tie and scored another in the top of the eighth to take the lead.
Elizabeth Montemurro (3-3) got the win in relief for the Blue Devils, entering in the sixth and blanking the Tigers in the seventh and eighth as her team rallied to win. Peyton (2-7) took the loss in the circle for Princeton.
CCSU jumped on the Tigers early in game two, using a 17-run second inning to take a commanding lead. A Peyton homer and a Sarah Rounsifer double put Princeton on the board in the bottom half of the second to make it 17-2, and each team added a pair in the fifth. Lizzy Pierce brought home the final two runs for Princeton with her two-RBI double.
Jordan Tingley (5-2) went all five for CCSU, while Michelle Tolfa (3-4) started and finished the game for Princeton with a Liza Kuhn relief appearance in between.
At the plate, Peyton was 4 for 7 with two RBIs over the twinbill, while Rounsifer went 2 for 3 and Nicole Ontiveros was 3 for 6. Pierce's three RBIs led Princeton in the doubleheader.
The Tigers will open the Ivy League season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Brown at '95 Field followed by a doubleheader against Yale Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The series was adjusted from its original Friday/Saturday format due to expected poor weather Friday.
