Softball Splits on Second Day in Maryland
March 05, 2011 | Softball
CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Kelsey VandeBergh's seventh-inning RBI single lifted the Princeton softball team to a 7-6 victory over Iona Saturday morning in Maryland for the Tigers' first win of the season before the Tigers dropped the afternoon contest to Liberty 8-2.
Against Iona, Princeton (1-2) led 6-0 but saw Iona (5-4) score three runs each in the sixth and seventh to tie it. After Megan Weidrick reached on an error to start the seventh inning against Iona reliever Deanne Algeo (0-1), Tory Roberts and Sarah Rounsifer followed with a single and a sacrifice to move Weidrick over, and VandeBergh's drop into right-center field brought home Weidrick for the winner.
Roberts had a game high three hits and five RBI, none bigger than her fourth-inning grand slam that turned a 1-0 Princeton advantage into a 5-0 lead.
Alex Peyton (1-0) went all seven innings for Princeton, giving up eight hits but walking none and striking out three.
Against Liberty, Princeton saw the Flames score seven runs over the last three innings to pull away in the 8-2 win.
Princeton led 2-1 after Weidrick's two-run single in the fourth, but Liberty (5-2) didn't wait long to turn the tables. The Flames scored one each in the fifth and sixth innings before a five-run seventh.
Michelle Tolfa went the first five innings in the circle for the Tigers, giving up four hits and a walk while fanning six. Liza Kuhn (0-1) took the loss in two innings of relief.
Princeton will face host Maryland-Baltimore County at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in their final game of the weekend.
