Penn Completes Series Sweep of Softball
April 17, 2011 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA -- Penn completed a four-game sweep of the Princeton softball team Sunday with 7-2 and 9-2 victories in Philadelphia.
Cornell split a twinbill at Columbia Sunday to stand at 7-4 in the Ivy South division with one game to play Monday at Columbia before its weekend is complete. Penn is in second in the division at 6-6, while the Tigers are four games back in the loss column at 4-8 and 13-21 overall. Columbia rounds out the division at 2-9 and will come to the Class of 1895 Field next weekend to meet the Tigers for four games.
Princeton led 2-0 midway through the opener before Penn scored seven runs between the fourth and sixth innings to claim the win. Alex Peyton, who went the full six innings in the circle for Princeton, fell to 4-11 on the season. Penn had just five hits and two walks against Peyton, but the Quakers were able to take advantage of a fielding error in each of their two scoring innings to get the come-from-behind win. Mikenzie Voves (8-7) gave up seven hits and three walks with Nicole Ontiveros going 3 for 4 and Kelsey VandeBergh getting a hit in each of her two at-bats.
Alex Peyton went 3 for 3 and Ontiveros had a two-hit game in the nightcap, but Penn scored five runs over the first two innings against Liza Kuhn (6-5) and added to the lead later in the 7-2 victory. Cailyn Hennessy (4-2) surrendered seven hits and a walk to the Tigers, who stranded five runners in scoring position in each of the two games.
Before Princeton hosts Columbia next weekend, the Tigers will welcome Monmouth to '95 Field for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday in the team's final non-league games.
