April 22, 2011 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Columbia will visit the Class of 1895 Field for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday as the Princeton softball team continues Ivy South divisional play.
Both doubleheaders will begin at 12:30 p.m.
With eight games to play, the race for the division title is still wide open. Cornell, at 7-5, leads by a game over Penn at 6-6 and by three over the Tigers at 4-8. Columbia is a game behind the Tigers at 3-9. In the North division, Harvard (10-2) is three games up on Dartmouth (7-5) with Yale (6-6) and Brown (5-7) close behind.
Princeton (13-21) is coming off a tough weekend at Penn where the Tigers were swept in four games. Lizzy Pierce remains atop the Tiger batting average list at .341, just ahead of Kelsey VandeBergh, who was 5 for 9 with three walks over the Penn series, at .323. In the circle, Alex Peyton (4-11) has the team's lowest ERA at 3.67 and the highest number of innings at 95.1 on a three-member staff that includes Liza Kuhn (6-5, 7.89) and Michelle Tolfa (3-5, 5.32).
Columbia (13-24) swept a twinbill at Rider Thursday, winning both in run-rule fashion to extend its winning streak to four games overall. Emily Caruthers leads the team in batting average at .347 as one of three hitters over .300, while Maggie Johnson has five of the team's 13 home runs. Johnson is one of two primary pitchers for the Lions and leads the team in ERA at 2.07 with a 3-14 record. Prophet Gaspard is 10-10 with a 2.38 ERA as the two pitchers have combined to throw nearly 90% of the team's innings.
Once the Columbia weekend is complete, the Tigers will host Cornell on Friday, April 29 before closing the regular season in Ithaca on that Sunday, May 1.
