Golfer Kelly Shon Qualifies for NCAA East Regional
April 26, 2011 | Women's Golf
Princeton freshman Kelly Shon will represent Princeton at the NCAA East Regional in Daytona Beach, Fla. as one of six individuals in the event, the NCAA announced Monday night.
Shon will join five other individual qualifiers and 24 qualifying teams at the tournament, which will be held May 5-7 at the LPGA International course. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on one of those eight qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Bryan, Texas later in May.
Shon led Princeton in each of the first seven tournaments of 2011 before Rachel Blum led the Tigers at the Ivy League Championship over the weekend. Shon finished tied for fifth in the event, earning first-team All-Ivy League honors.
Susannah Aboff '09 was the last Tiger to qualify individually, doing so as a senior two years ago, while Shon's qualification will mark the eighth time, all since 1995, that a Princeton golfer has competed individually at the NCAA regional. Laura Gilmore '98 in 1995 and Avery Kiser '05 in 2002 were the two previous freshmen to represent Princeton individually.
