Softball Splits with Cornell in Home Finale
April 29, 2011 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Both members of Princeton's softball Class of 2011 contributed to the Tigers' 3-2 victory in the first game of Friday's Senior Day doubleheader against Cornell, though the Big Red came back to win the second game 9-6.
Princeton senior Michelle Tolfa (4-6) and her Cornell counterpart Elizabeth Dalrymple dueled for four scoreless innings before the Big Red broke through with two runs in the fifth, a lead that stood for an inning before the Tigers began to chip away. Tolfa's senior classmate, Megan Weidrick, hit her first home run of the season in the sixth to put Princeton within 2-1, and rookie Maddie Cousens had a two-out single to score Lizzy Pierce for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh.
The eighth inning saw Tolfa retire three of four batters around a single before the Tigers cashed in on their extra-inning at-bat. Alex Peyton had a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch, allowing Pierce to drive her home with the game-winning single.
Cornell jumped on Peyton in the circle early in game two, scoring four first-inning runs before the Tigers began chipping away once again. Princeton manufactured two runs in each of the first two innings to tie it at 4-4, but Cornell's Lauren Bucolo hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to put the Big Red ahead 6-4.
Cornell added to it with three runs in the fifth against Liza Kuhn (6-7), and though Princeton was able to get two runs back, Big Red reliever Ali Tomlinson pitched two scoreless innings to save the win for Dalrymple (17-7). While getting the decision in both games, Dalrymple finished the day tossing 13 innings for the Big Red.
Following the split, Princeton stands at 15-25 overall and 6-12 in the Ivy League as its home schedule comes to an end. Still at stake for Cornell (25-19-1, 10-6) is the chance to clinch the Ivy South title, as it leads Penn by two games. Princeton will close its season Sunday at Cornell with a 12:30 p.m. twinbill.
