#5 Men's Heavies Battle For Historic Childs Cup In Lone Road Regatta
April 07, 2011 | Heavyweight Rowing
For the only time this regular season, the Princeton men's heavyweights will compete outside of its own Lake Carnegie course. The fifth-ranked Tigers will make the short trip down to the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia to compete for the historic Childs Cup against a pair of Top 20 Ivy League rivals.
Princeton, which opened its season with wins over Georgetown and Syracuse last weekend, will open its Ivy League schedule Saturday morning against No. 12 Columbia and No. 17 Penn in a four-race regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Childs Cup, the oldest trophy awarded in collegiate rowing, will be on the line during the 10:50 a.m. varsity eight competition.
Princeton has won 43 Childs Cups in this annual regatta, one short of Penn's leading total of 44. Princeton has been the dominant program recently in this series, which began in 1879, having won 16 of the last 17 competitions. Columbia broke a 15-year win streak in 2009, but the Tigers bounced back last season and defeated the Lions by 2.3 seconds to regain the Cup.
The Tigers showed their strong depth last weekend, sweeping four races against their Big East rivals in a scrimmage competition. They will look for similar results Saturday morning in their Ivy League opener, especially with reigning EARC champion Harvard coming to Lake Carnegie next weekend for the Compton Cup competition.
