Softball Deals Harvard First Ivy Loss in Twinbill Split
April 08, 2011 | Softball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three seventh-inning runs helped the Princeton softball team take a split at Ivy North leader Harvard Friday afternoon, giving the Tigers a 3-2 win in the nightcap after dropping the first game 7-0.
Princeton has split all three of its Ivy League doubleheaders so far and will head to Dartmouth for a 12:30 p.m. twinbill Saturday. The Tigers are now 12-16 overall on the season and 3-3 in the Ivy League, while the nightcap loss was Harvard's first on the Ivy season, dropping the Crimson to 19-11 overall and 5-1 in Ivy play.
Harvard got to the Tigers and starter Liza Kuhn (6-3) early, scoring six runs over the first two innings while Crimson starter Rachel Brown (13-4) held Princeton to two hits in the 7-0 Harvard victory. Lizzy Pierce had a second-inning double and Kelsey VandeBergh had a fourth-inning single for the Tigers.
Alex Peyton (3-9) had a complete-game six-hitter in the nightcap and battled from behind for the first six frames after a solo home run by Harvard's Kasey Lange in the first. Harvard's Laura Ricciardone (6-4) had surrendered just three hits through the first six innings before getting into trouble in the seventh. Candy Button, VandeBergh and Peyton started the inning with consecutive singles, the last of which tied the game at 1-1.
The game-tying hit led to Brown returning to the circle to try and stop Princeton there, but Pierce greeted Brown with a run-scoring double to make it 2-1. Tory Roberts then followed with another double to make it 3-1 before Brown ended the threat.
Peyton gave up a solo home run to Harvard's Jane Alexander in the seventh but retired the other three batters she faced in the seventh to preserve a 3-2 win.
