May 21, 2011 | Women's Lacrosse
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (5/21/11) - The defending national champion Maryland used a late run in the first half to surge past Princeton en route to a 15-6 run in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Quarterfinals on Saturday, May 21 at the Field Hockey/Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md.
Maryland had a slim 34-21 edge in shots, while Princeton won the ground ball battle 13-10 and won 11 of 21 draw controls. Princeton goalie senior Erin Tochihara made 14 saves while junior Brittany Dipper stopped a career-high 15 shots on the other end.
Princeton's senior Lindsey deButts won the opening draw and the Tigers would hold possession until they scored at 27:43. Junior Cassie Pyle got the first goal when she ran in on the left side and sent a low shot past Dipper.
Maryland couldn't get anything going offensively with a number of turnovers and just one shot on goal in the early going.
Pyle had her second shot on goal saved at 24:00 when she sprinted down the field, but sophomore Jaci Gassaway got the ground ball to keep possession in Princeton's hands. A free-position shot by Gassaway was saved but senior Lizzy Drymm scooped up the ground ball and shot wide, with a Terrapin being nearest to the endline.
Maryland's Kristy Black tallied the equalizer at 20:09 before Tochihara made two big saves to keep the game even. Beth Glaros had a free-position shot saved by Tochihara at 17:31 and Tochihara made another big stop 20 seconds later on a Brandi Jones shot.
The Tigers would take a 2-1 lead at 16:27 when Pyle was awarded a free-position attempt. She passed off to the left side of the arc to Gassaway, who faked out Dipper with a high shot. Gassaway nearly got her second when she had a shot bounce and hit the post and flying back out near the Maryland team bench. Senior Maisie Devine would get the ball and brought it back into the fan where Pyle would score her second of the day with a rocket to the right side of Dipper at 14:40.
Maryland called a timeout, won the next draw, but quickly turned it over.
Pyle would earn another free-position attempt but couldn't convert as Dipper made a big save from her knees at 12:57. Maryland turned the ball over just over the first restraining line leading Gassaway to take point blank shot but it was stopped by Dipper.
On the other end of the field Tochihara stopped a Glaros shot at 10:00 with her body and cleaned it up with her stick and sent the ball down the field. Drumm had a high shot stopped by Dipper at 9:20.
Maryland would make the proper adjustments and tallied three goals in 1:11 giving the Terrapins the confidence they had been lacking the first 22 minutes of the game.
Black notched her second of the day with a pass from behind the cage from Alex Aust at 8:53. Laura Merrifield converted on a free-position attempt 27 seconds later and Mollison put away a high shot that would give Maryland its first lead, 4-3 at 7:42.
Tochihara made a stop on a one-on-one with Mollison after a turnover near the Princeton restraining line at 6:30, but the Terrapins continued to throw what they had at her.
Maryland would score four straight from in 1:04, with Mollison getting three of those four goals.
Sophomore Charlotte Davis ended the seven-goal Terrapin run at 1:48 when she sent a bouncing shot over Dipper's helmet, to end the half 8-4 in favor of the Terps.
Schwarzman got herself onto the scoresheet with a goal at 21:23 and added her second two minutes later.
Merrifield converted a free-position shot to make it 11-4 at 16:40 before Schwarzmann tallied her third at 12:34.
Schwarzmann would get her fourth in an odd series of events as sophomore Jenna Davis went down with an injury but no timeout was called and Schwarzmann scored during that time. Maryland would take a 10-goal lead at 10:49 with a tally by Aust to start the running clock.
Princeton would sandwich a Merrifield goal with free-position goals. Freshman Sarah Lloyd scored Princeton's first of the second half at 9:18 on an eight-meter attempt. Sophomore Sam Ellis would convert her own free-position goal at 3:11 to make it 15-6.
Pyle finished the game with two goals and an assist, the only multiple-point scorer for the Tigers. Schwarzmann had six points, Mollison had five, while Black and Merrifield both recorded hat tricks. Aust would contribute two points.
Princeton concludes its season 12-7 overall.
