June 20, 2011 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team ranked sixth in the annual Division I All-Academic Top-30 team rankings, it was announced recently by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Meanwhile, former Tiger wrestler Mike Novogratz '87 was named Man of the Year by USA Wrestling.
With a team GPA over 3.14, Princeton earned the No. 6 ranking in the 2010-11 standings.
"I'm proud of this achievement for our team," said head coach Chris Ayres, who will be entering his sixth season this November. "We want the guys to be successful in everything they do, and this honor rewards the hard work they put to their academics."
Novogratz is no stranger to hard work. A leader and major financial supporter of the Beat the Streets program in New York City, Novogratz was named the USA Wrestling Man of the Year for all that he has contributed to the sport of wrestling. Novogratz is Princeton's 1987 recipient of The Treide Trophy, given in honor of George B. Treide '36. It is awarded annually to that member of the Princeton varsity wrestling team who by his spirit, ability and sportsmanship has contributed most to the sport.
