A trio of Princeton fencers - Ambika Singh, Susannah Scanlan and Eve Levin - have competed at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China.
Scanlan, who entered Princeton with the Class of 2012, placed 14th in the epee at the WUG as part of a four-member American contingent. She and Singh, who entered with the Class of 2014, are both taking time off from the university as they aim for a spot at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Singh placed 10th overall as the best of four Americans in the foil, while Scanlan was the second-finishing American in the epee by one spot to Notre Dame alum Kelley Hurley.
In the elimination round, Scanlan, who entered the competition as the epee's No. 10 seed, earned a bye in the Round of 64 before defeating Rie Ohashi of Japan 15-3 in the second round. In the Round of 16, she fell 15-12 to Russia's Tatiana Andryushina, who went on to finish fifth. Singh, as the No. 2 seed in the foil, also earned a first-round bye and won her Round of 32 match against Satsuki Aizawa of Japan 15-10 before falling to Italian Alice Volpi 15-12 in the Round of 16. Sophomore Levin finished 18th overall in the foil, dropping her Round of 32 match to Germany's Anne Sauer 15-7 after a first-round bye.
In the team portion of the competition, Scanlan sided with Hurley and her sister Courtney Hurley as well as Holly Buechel to claim a silver medal. Team USA defeated Hong Kong and Estonia on the way to the gold medal bout before falling to France.
