August 23, 2011 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
Princeton golf student-athletes were in major competitions on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border Monday, with junior Bernie D'Amato in Wisconsin and sophomore Kelly Shon in Quebec.
D'Amato completed the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur championship outside Milwaukee, shooting a 5-over 75 to tie for 230th in the 315-player field. The top 64 players will advance to match play, and all 33 players who shot even par in the first round are tied for 62nd with one more round of stroke play coming Tuesday.
Shon was in Blainville, Que., where she won a Monday qualifier into the Canadian Open, which begins in earnest Thursday in Mirabel, Que. Shon was one of three players to shoot 71, and the top four participants among the 40 finishers qualified for a spot in the Canadian Open. Shon's former Princeton teammate, Kate Scarpetta '11, shot 13-over in the qualifier just three days after finishing runner-up in the Pennsylvania Women's Amateur tournament.
