Six to Join Softball from Class of 2015
August 23, 2011 | Softball
The class includes pitchers Meredith Brown and Sarah McGowan, infielders Libby Crowe, Rachel Rendina and Alyssa Schmidt, and catcher Cara Worden.
Here are fifth-year head coach Trina Salcido's thoughts on each of the newcomers:
"The Class of 2015 is a well-rounded group of athletes that bring an abundance of talent to the program," Salcido said. "These six young women will have an immediate impact on the program's depth of talent throughout the lineup. They will collectively contribute speed, power and the ability to compete at a high level."
Meredith Brown (Scripps Ranch/San Diego, Calif.) was the 2011 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year selection by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "Meredith will be a key addition to the pitching staff and a major contributor in the circle for the Tigers."
Libby Crowe (Bartram Trail/Saint Johns, Fla.) was named the 2011 St. John's County Player of the Year by the St. Augustine Record: "Libby possesses great athleticism as a utility player that will add depth to the infield and outfield."
Sarah McGowan (Neshaminy/Langhorne, Pa.) was a Trentonian first-team all-area selection in 2011: "Sarah is a versatile player that brings power to the batting lineup and will compete for time in the circle and at the corners."
Rachel Rendina (Cardinal Newman/Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was a Palm Beach Post first-team all-area choice in 2011: "Rachel brings great speed to the base paths, infield and outfield. We are looking for her to add to our slapping and short game at the plate."
Alyssa Schmidt (Whitney/Rocklin, Calif.) was a Cal-Hi medium schools all-state team pick in 2011: "Alyssa will make an immediate impact on the infield and at the plate. She has great instincts and knowledge of the game."
Cara Worden (Foothill/Santa Ana, Calif.) was an Orange County Register first-team All-Sea View League choice in 2010: "Cara has great instincts behind the plate. Her quick release and sharp framing skills will add depth at the catching position."
