PRINCETON, N.J. (9/15/11) - The Princeton men's soccer team hosts Villanova on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., its first of two straight games against teams from the BIG EAST.
The game will be webstreamed on GoPrincetonTigers.tv for subscribers. Live stats will also be available free of charge.
Princeton is seeking its first win of the season and with classes starting on Friday, the team is hoping for a crowd of Orange & Black to cheer them on to victory. The Tigers are 0-2-1 with two games going into overtime. Princeton played the College of Charleston to a scoreless tie and lost its next two games but just one goal.The Tigers are outshooting their opponent 15.7 shots per game to 9.0 and have a 27-11 edge corner kicks. Freshman Cameron Porter leads the team in scoring with two points, while senior Antoine Hoppenot has one point. Junior Max Gallin has allowed just three goals on 11 shots for a 0.92 goals against average and a .727 save percentage in his first season as the starting keeper.
Villanova enters Friday's game with a 2-1-2 overall record. The Wildcats most recently played No. 6 UCSB to a 0-0 tie in California, two days after recording their first loss of the season, 1-0 game at Cal Poly. Villanova defeated Manhattan and Drexel and tied Colgate. The squad is in search of its first road win of the season.
The Wildcats are averaging 15 shots per game and holding team's to 13, while giving up 27 corner kicks to their own 14. Aaron Dennis leads the team in scoring with three goals, including both game-winning goals. Kyle Soroka and Oscar Umar had two points apiece. John Fogarty has played every minute in goal and in five games, three of which were shutouts, has allowed just two goals on 24 shots for a 0.37 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
The series history stands at 2-2. The Wildcats won last year the first meeting since 2003, a 2-0 game in Villanova on Sept. 19. Shots were event at 14 apiece but the Tigers couldn't get by the Wildcats defense.
In the 37th minute Villanova got on the scoreboard with a goal from Kevin Garcia who lofted the ball from 20 yards out after picking up a feed from Anthony Griffin. Villanova held the pace in the game and would continue to early in the second half before Princeton turned its jets on in the final 20 minutes. Princeton started to penetrate Villanova's tough three in the back with 20 minutes to play, and it gave the team more energy to try to find the equalizer. Despite barraging the Wildcat defense with shots, Princeton felt the game slip away in the 86th minute when Renna scored for Nova.
