PRINCETON, N.J. (9/16/11) - Junior Matt Sanner scored the golden goal at 101:47 to lift the Princeton men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Villanova on Friday, Sept. 16 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Senior Antoine Hoppenot set up the goal, as he pushed the ball to sophomore Chris Benedict who then crossed the ball into the box to Sanner. Sanner managed to get loose from his defender and knocked the ball to the right of keeper John Fogarty.
Junior Max Gallin made a career-high nine saves for Princeton in his first career win, as Princeton improves to 1-2-1 on the season. Villanova's Fogarty finished the game with five saves as the Wildcats move to 2-2-2.
The game featured three penalty kicks and seven yellow cards. Villanova had a 22-13 edge in shots thanks to a 13-8 differential in the second half. Princeton had a 9-8 edge in corner kicks, while Nova had 23 fouls to Princeton's 15.
The Tigers first chance of the game came at 9:48. Hoppenot was battling with two defenders on the right side just inside the 18-yard box. He passed the ball to freshman Cameron Porter who hit the ball a touch too high. Sophomore Patrick O'Neil tested Fogarty for the first time at 27:40 with a header that had to be tipped over the cross bar off a Myles McGinley corner kick.
Princeton would be awarded the first of two penalty kicks at 28:22. Hoppenot set up to take the shot but the ball caromed off the near post leaving the scoreless game in tact.
Kyle Soroka had three chances to score for Villanova at the end of the first half. He had the Wildcats first shot on goal at 32:36, but the shot from 45 yards out was easily picked up by Gallin. Four minutes later he tried to put away a cross but the ball went high. Gallin made another stop on a Soroka shot at 38:10.
Freshman Evan Saitta nearly put away a free kick with just under five minutes to play in the half. He sent a direct shot in on goal from 25 yards out that Fogarty had to leap to grab.
Villanova seemed to have a slight edge at the start of the second, getting five shots to Princeton's one in the first 10 minutes. Princeton's shot was a blast from McGinley from 20 yards out, while Villanova had a three-man play result in a great save by Gallin at close range at 53:16. Two minutes later Gallin made another terrific stop at the near post on an Aaron Dennis rocket.
Sanner had his first quality chance of the game at 65:04. A Princeton free kick was pinballed around in the box with Sanner getting the last touch but had his shot blocked. Princeton had another free kick less than a minute later. McGinley curved it around the Villanova wall but Fogarty scooped it up.
Gallin preserved the clean slate with back-to-back impressive stops on shots by Hayden Harr at 80:42 and 81:35.
Villanova was awarded a penalty kick at 82:23 that was converted by Emerson Lawrence to put the Wildcats up 1-0 with less than eight minutes to play.
Princeton earned its second penalty kick of the game at 88:18. Captain Mark Linnville called the shot. Linnville's shot was stopped by Fogarty but rolled wide right and over the goal line.
In the overtimes, Villanova would have a 4-1 edge in shots, Princeton's lone shot being the Sanner goal.
