Field Hockey Drops Ivy Opener at Dartmouth 2-1

HANOVER, N.H. (9/17/11) - The Princeton field hockey team dropped its Ivy League opener 2-1 at Dartmouth on Saturday as Kelly Hood snapped a 1-1 tie with her goal in the 55th minute. The loss snapped a 24-game Ivy unbeaten streak for the Tigers that dated back to the 2007 season.
Princeton outshot and outcornered Dartmouth for the game, but the Big Green had the better of the play in the first half. Dartmouth outshot the Tigers 8-2 in the half and broke through when Hood put her team on the board late in the first half. The Tigers began to take over the play in the second half and fired 15 of its 17 shots in the final 35 minutes of play. Princeton earned four corners and took five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half but couldn't break through. Princeton finally got on the board in the 51st minute when Sydney Kirby netted her first collegiate goal. The play came on Princeton seventh penalty corner of the afternoon. Kirby inserted the ball and would then deflect Amanda Bird's blast into the Dartmouth goal to knot the game at 1-1.
Princeton earned an immediate shot after the goal that went wide and looked to seize the game's momentum after Dartmouth's Meghan Everett was given a yellow card, but couldn't convert on its first chance with the player advantage. Play went to the Princeton end and the Big Green drew its first corner of the second half and converted on its second direct corner of the game with Hood again scoring from Leger and Mansini.
Looking to even the game, Princeton threw everything it had at the Dartmouth goal. Bird hit a post in the 59th minute and Molly Goodman had a shot stopped in the 67th minute as the Dartmouth defense successfully defended two Princeton corners in the final five minutes of the game.
Princeton goalie Christina Maida made six saves in the loss, while Dartmouth's Meagan Vakiener made seven for the win. Princeton outshot Dartmouth 17-10 and doubled up the Big Green in corners 10-5.
Princeton falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League with the loss. Princeton visits fifth-ranked Syracuse on Sunday.
